DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (KFGO-KDLM) – Runners and walkers of all ages will gather in Detroit Lakes September 12 for the Essentia Health Dick Beardsley Races, celebrating one of Minnesota’s most legendary runners. The races are held in partnership with Project 412.
The event includes a half marathon, 10K, 5K and Youth Run, offering something for experienced runners as well as those simply looking to take on a challenge. Among the weekend’s events is the Andy Beardsley Memorial 5K, which holds special meaning for the Beardsley family and the Detroit Lakes community.
The races were established in 1996, with the original half marathon developed as a tune-up race for the Twin Cities Marathon, and additional distances were added as the event grew.
Race Director James Botnen says having Beardsley’s name attached to a race in Detroit Lakes is something special. Beardsley became a household name in the running world after the 1982 Boston Marathon.
Botnen says the half marathon is particularly meaningful because the course takes runners around the entire lake, giving participants a chance to experience Detroit Lakes while taking on the challenge.
Dick Beardsley will take part in a special speaker session beginning at 6 pm Friday, September 11, at Peoples Park, where he will share his story of resilience, determination and living life to the fullest. The evening also includes a spaghetti dinner sponsored by Hub 41.
“There is a lot of stress during the week,” Botnen said. “But when that starting call goes off, it hits me. This is why we do it.”
Botnen says the weekend is more than a series of races. It’s an opportunity for the community to come together around health, activity and a shared accomplishment.
