ST. PAUL (MNN) – Minnesota anglers caught nine new state record fish this spring. DNR Fisheries Program Consultant Mandy Erickson says nine is pretty good compared to previous years.
“It is a lot. Typically, on average, we’ll see about 5 to 7 records broke in a given year. So this is a lot, being that we’re halfway through the year, we’ve had this many records so far. And the exciting part is it’s a variety of species.”
Seven of the records were in the catch-and-release category.
Erickson says one of those records, an 80-inch lake sturgeon, meets a population reestablishment goal.
“At 80 inches that does meet one of our population reestablishment goals that has been set to make sure that you know we have evidence of long lived species that are reaching maturity able to reproduce and really surviving until that 80 inch criteria”
If you think you’ve caught a record fish, more information can be found on the DNR website on how to submit it.
