ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) — The Minnesota Department of Health says it’s monitoring one person in Minnesota who may have briefly been exposed overseas to someone who was on board a cruise ship and tested positive for hantavirus.
The health department says the person does not currently have symptoms. The department says the risk to public health is extremely low.
A hantavirus outbreak was recently identified aboard the MV Hondius, a Dutch cruise ship that departed from Argentina in April. The World Health Organization and the CDC have confirmed that the illness is caused by the Andes virus, a strain of hantavirus that is unique because it is the only one known to allow limited person-to-person transmission.
