ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO/Learfield) – The House Ethics Committee is holding a hearing on ethics complaints filed against three Minnesota lawmakers. Republican Representatives Walter Hudson of Albertville and Elliot Engen of Lino Lakes are being questioned for leaving a committee hearing to go drink alcohol.
“If you’re going to make the case that the public trust is violated whenever a member of the legislature isn’t at the legislature, phew! Get ready for a lot more of these because they’re coming.” Hudson said when asked if taxpayers would approve of his actions.
Engen did apologize for his actions on the night in question.
“Am I remorseful for the events of the 27th? Yes I am and I own it. I completely own it. I put that on no one but myself and I have to life with that shame and guilt. But I am also going to be made better because of it. But I won’t characterized as a bad or as a lazy legislator.” Engen said.
The third lawmaker, Democrat Alex Falconer of Eden Prairie, is accused of lobbying for the Boundary Waters in addition to his Capitol duties.
The committee can recommend disciplinary action, but it would have to be voted on by the House.
