WEST FARGO, N.D. (KFGO) – The West Fargo Police Department is getting major technology upgrades under a 10-year, $6.5 million contract approved Monday.
The City Commission voted unanimously to buy new equipment from Axon Enterprise. The deal includes body cameras, squad car dash cameras, Tasers, license plate readers, and upgraded interview room systems.
Police Chief Pete Nielsen said the change matches tools used by nearby agencies across the metro area. He said the equipment will boost safety, openness, and teamwork while keeping department data secure and local.
Each officer will receive a new body camera that uploads video straight from the field. The cameras also feature a voice assistant that can translate talk into more than 60 languages on the spot. Officers can also use the voice tool to ask about department rules without taking their eyes off a call.
The license plate readers track plates, not people. City officials noted the cameras do not use facial recognition or track personal profiles. The public can view system data through an online dashboard.
The rollout begins in spring 2027.
