FARGO (KFGO) – With winter weather approaching, the City of Fargo is hoping to make sure residents are prepared for weather events like a blizzard or ice storm.
This week is Winter Weather Awareness Week. Fargo Emergency Manager Brady Scribner says residents should start preparing for winter weather now.
“With preparedness, you know, we don’t have to do it all at once. So the point is to build those habits, to get prepared over time. So if we just start buying a couple extra shelf stable food items that’s better than doing nothing, so just starting small and growing.” Scribner said.
He says winter preparedness doesn’t have to stop at home either. Drivers are recommended to make sure they keep a winter kit in their car that includes items like a hat, gloves, shovel, ice scraper and more. Scribner says the goal is to be prepared to either get yourself out of heavy snow, or be prepared to shelter in place.
“If there’s a big storm, looking out ahead and looking at the forecast and preparing for travel is important. If you can stay at home you should, don’t risk trying to get out.” Scribner said.
He also says the first thing residents should do is whatever is easiest, but recommends stocking food and signing up for Cass Clay Alerts, which can be done here. It is also recommended to have a backup power source if possible, especially for those that rely on medical machines like a CPAP.
The National Weather service has predicted that this winter could be more mild than North Dakota residents are used to, but Scribner says the area has seen bad weather events in past El Nino years.
“Even though we’re getting some good news, presumably, we can still have those incidents that are still going to be impactful and still be concerning. So we still have to be prepared, and really be ready for any winter instance that could show up.” Scribner said.
