Allen Burgad
BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) – Allen Burgad has officially been named president of Valley City State University after serving as the school’s interim president since December 2025.
The State Board of Higher Education voted unanimously to appoint Burgad to the position, citing Burgad’s leadership and accomplishments during his time in the interim role.
Burgad previously served as dean of VCSU’s School of Education. A graduate of the university, he brings more than 30 years of experience in education, including work as a superintendent, assistant superintendent and dean.
During his interim presidency, VCSU achieved record enrollment growth, student retention and degree completion. Burgad also led the development of the university’s strategic plan for 2026 through 2030, called Forward Together.
His other priorities included expanding workforce partnerships, strengthening shared governance and advancing initiatives focused on student success, teacher preparation and artificial intelligence readiness.
“I’m honored and privileged to serve this great institution and the state of North Dakota,” Burgad said in a statement. “Our remarkable students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community truly make this a special place.”
Burgad thanked the State Board of Higher Education and university system leadership for their confidence in him. He said he looks forward to continuing to work with the campus community, alumni and regional partners to move the university forward.
State Board of Higher Education Chair Kevin Black said Burgad has demonstrated an understanding of the university, its community and its role in preparing North Dakota’s future workforce.
Burgad officially succeeds Dr. Alan LaFave, who now serves as president of Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
