James Kollie Junior, 29 (Clay County Jail)
MOORHEAD (KFGO) – A Moorhead man has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of his mother.
James Kollie Jr., 29, was found guilty Wednesday by Judge Tammy Merkins following a court trial in Clay County.
Kollie Jr. was previously charged with 2nd-degree murder in 2023 in the death of his mother Rebecca Kollie.
Police say Kollie stabbed his mother at her home in Moorhead in December 2022. He was arrested the next day in Whapeton.
Court documents say Kollie planned the killing, pointing to evidence that he bought a knife, gloves and a face mask the day before. Investigators also found his mother’s blood on his clothing and in her vehicle.
“This was a terrible and heartbreaking crime, and no verdict can undo the loss suffered by Receia’s family or bring her back. Our responsibility was to present the evidence and seek justice for Receia,” said Brian Melton, Clay County Attorney,
Kollie Jr. will undergo a pre-sentence investigation before sentencing.
He faces life in prison when he is sentenced on December 14.
