BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) – North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong has asked the Legislature to at least ban the sale of kratom to those under age 21 and create a truth and labeling bill so people know what’s in what they buy in his State of the State Address.
“How would that even work? Who’s going to products to ensure that 7OH levels aren’t too high and that they are not laced with synthetics or other substances. The state certainly doesn’t have the resources or capacity,” Armstrong said. “What we’re left with is the kratom industry to police itself. Name me another psychotropic substance where we allow that to happen because you can’t.”
Armstrong wants the sale, possession and distribution of kratom in all forms to be banned. Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, and Tennessee have kratom prohibitions.
He believes some lawmakers can’t resist the urge for “political grandstanding” during a special session two months before the election.
“Whatever political statement you are trying to make, if it doesn’t involve preventing people from overdosing on an over-the-counter drug that you can buy without an ID, you’re probably on the wrong side of said political issue,” Armstrong said.
The governor didn’t mention any other bills being considered in the special session like banning non-disclosure agreements on data centers and industrial projects. or unfinished construction on the military gallery on the capitol grounds in his speech.
