ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO/WCCO) – Governor Walz is reacting to a social media post by President Trump that showed an image of children wearing hijabs in a Minnesota charter school kindergarten class.
The original post on Truth Social was just the image showing two rows of kindergarten students. Most of them were little girls wearing hijabs.
Trump later reposted video from the same class event from an account named “End Wokeness.” That post included commentary:
“Public school in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Every girl is in a hijab in kindergarten.”
In his response, Walz posted that the president was attacking the students only because of what they were wearing.
“The President of the United States is attacking a group of kindergarteners because of the clothes they wore to school,” Walz said.
The image was taken at a Gateway STEM Academy kindergarten class. Gateway is a charter school operates under a board of directors and Pillsbury United Communities.
The posts generated some negative comments, including calling the children “future terrorists.”
The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned the post.
“By using his global platform to amplify anti-Muslim bigotry and target Muslim children at this elementary school, President Trump is putting lives at risk,” said CAIR. “Just two months ago, two white supremacists attacked a mosque and private school full of children in San Diego. Children deserve to feel safe in their schools and communities. When a political leader validates hate speech, it gives bigots a green light to target minority children. We call on all people of conscience, regardless of political affiliation, to reject this dangerous escalation of religious hatred.”
