MOORHEAD, MN (KFGO) – A man experiencing a mental health crisis was disarmed by a friend Wednesday morning before being detained by police, according to the Moorhead Police Department.
Officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of Second Avenue North at approximately 11:36 a.m. following a report of a possible overdose. While officers were en route, emergency dispatchers received additional information indicating an armed man at the location was threatening to harm himself.
Before authorities arrived, a friend of the man intervened, resulting in a brief physical struggle. The friend managed to gain control of the firearm just as officers entered the building, police said.
During the altercation, at least two rounds were fired. However, investigators found no evidence to suggest the shots were directed at the friend or the responding officers. No injuries were reported.
Both men were initially detained by police, and the firearm was secured. The man who was experiencing the crisis was transported to a local hospital to undergo a mental health evaluation.
The investigation remains active, and police said no additional information is releasable at this time.
The Moorhead Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the Moorhead Fire Department, and Sanford Ambulance.
