FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) – State Sen. Josh Boschee declared victory Tuesday night in a crowded five-way race to become Fargo’s next mayor, as voters also shook up the city commission and overwhelmingly approved an infrastructure tax extension.
Boschee, a Democrat-NPL lawmaker representing Fargo’s District 44, secured nearly 47% of the vote. He comfortably outpaced his closest challenger, City Commissioner Michelle Turnberg, who finished second with 27% of the ballots cast.
The mayoral seat was left open after long-time incumbent Tim Mahoney announced earlier this year he would not seek another term.
Turnberg conceded the race late Tuesday, thanking her supporters and urging the city to remain focused on fiscal responsibility and public safety.
New Faces on City Commission
The shakeup at City Hall extended to the Fargo City Commission, where two open seats drew a highly competitive field.
Former Cass County Commission Chair Chad Peterson and Fargo School Board member Nikkie Gullickson captured the top two spots to claim the seats. Peterson led the pack with 32% of the vote, followed closely by Gullickson at 29%.
The two newcomers narrowly edged out former Fargo City Commissioner Tony Gehrig, who was attempting a political comeback on a platform of strict spending cuts. Gehrig finished third with 24% of the vote.
Peterson and Gullickson will fill the vacancies left by outgoing commissioners who chose not to seek reelection.
Sales Tax Extension Sweeps
In addition to choosing new leadership, Fargo residents voted decisively on the city’s financial future.
A ballot measure to extend the city’s existing 1% infrastructure sales tax passed with over 70% approval. The tax, which was set to expire next year, will now continue for another 20 years.
City officials have stated the revenue will remain dedicated to flood control projects, road repairs, and water treatment facility upgrades.
The election results will remain unofficial until the Cass County Canvas Board meets next week to certify the final vote totals.
