FOSSTON, MN (KFGO) – A 31-year-old Fosston man has died following a shooting, and a suspect is in custody.
TeeJay Alvarez died Tuesday morning at Essentia Health in Fargo as a result of a gunshot wound, according to the Cass County Coroner’s Office.
The suspected shooter, Cory Burnette Jr., 22, also of Fosston, was arrested. Burnette is being held at the Northwest Regional Correctional Center in Crookston on probable cause of second-degree assault and intentional discharge of a firearm. Formal charges against Burnette are currently pending.
Fosston police officers responded to an apartment complex on the 300 block of Mark Avenue at approximately 3:20 p.m. Monday after a 911 call reported a disturbance that potentially involved a gun.
According to investigators, Alvarez was shot inside one of the apartments and was initially transported by a private party to Essentia Health-Fosston Hospital. He was subsequently flown by air ambulance to the Fargo hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Officers who entered the apartment located Burnette and took him into custody.
The Fosston Police Department says the investigation remains active and ongoing, noting that further details will be released in the formal criminal complaint.
Police are being assisted in the investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota State Patrol.
