SHELLY, Minn. (KFGO) – An evacuation order for residents of Shelly has been lifted.
It was put in place Friday morning after fire broke out at a privately-owned grain elevator.
A deputy state fire marshal is looking for the cause of the blaze. Early indications are that it was the result of a lightning strike.
The city, with a population of about 180, experienced a loss of water pressure due to a power outage related to the fire and it’s possible that the drinking water is contaminated. The city has issued a boil water advisory. Residents are urged to boil their water or use an alternative source, such as bottled water. The advisory may be in effect until early next week. Emergency shelters at the museum in Shelly and Halstad Landmark Building have been closed.
Several fire departments responded along with a regional hazardous materials team from the Moorhead Fire Department after the blaze spread to a second building that contained farm chemicals.
Shelly is about 45 miles north of Moorhead on Highway 75. There were no reports of injuries.
