FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (KFGO) – A Fergus Falls woman has been charged with child endangerment after her arrest Tuesday afternoon near Swan Lake south of Fergus Falls.
A complaint filed in Otter Tail County District Court says deputies responded for a child welfare check at about 4:30 p.m.
A driver reported that he saw a woman carrying an infant. The woman was not wearing shoes. It was about 50 degrees and was windy and raining. The woman told the driver that she was fine and continued walking.
The complaint says the driver stopped and observed the woman walking in the ditch without the child. He then found the infant on the ground, in the ditch. He picked up the child and called law enforcement. Anastasia Vaughn, 52, was found in the woods. She is the grandmother of the child. Vaughn was stumbling and had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol. Vaughn’s husband arrived at the scene and confirmed that she had been drinking earlier in the day. He said they had been caring for their two grandchildren.
Vaughn was arrested. A preliminary breath test showed an alcohol concentration level of .229.
The charge is a gross misdemeanor. A conviction carries a maximum sentence of 364 days in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both.
