FORT RANSOM, N.D. (KFGO) – Ransom County Sheriff Darren Benneweis says two kayakers drowned after going over the Fort Ransom Dam on the Sheyenne river Sunday afternoon.
A number of units responded to the call around 4 p.m., and one victim was recovered late yesterday. Efforts are underway today to recover the second victim.
Benneweis says the Sheriff’s Department is working with North Dakota Game & Fish and U.S. Corps of Engineers who may try to slow the river at the Baldhill Dam to help the search if the second victim can’t be found soon. Benneweis says slowing the river flow and lowering the level could take several days.
The names of the victims have not yet been released.
