FLANDREAU, S.D. (KFGO) – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says 40-year-old Joseph Hoek of Sioux Falls has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated eluding for the death of Moody County Chief Deputy Sheriff Ken Prorok last Fri. afternoon.
Prorok was killed when when he was struck by a car driven by Hoek. Prorok was attempting to put down spike strips to stop Hoek’s car, who was leading law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit.
Hoek made his first court appearance Monday at the Moody County Courthouse in Flandreau with officers looking on. He was ordered held without bond.
A first-degree murder charge is a Class A felony and carries a maximum sentence of death or life without parole. The aggravated eluding charge is a Class 6 felony which can result in a maximum sentence of two years in state prison.
The investigation is being conducted by the State Division of Criminal Investigation, South Dakota Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies.
Earlier Fri., Hoek was wanted in Sioux Falls for slashing tires on several vehicles.
