JAMESTOWN, N.D. (KFGO NEWS DAKOTA) – Two anglers are credited with rescuing a Jamestown man after his snowmobile plunged through thin ice on Jamestown Reservoir.
Authorities say it happened around noon Monday when Cody Deese’s snowmobile broke through the ice. Hearing noise, Skylar Schmeichel, and Shane Weiss, who were fishing nearby, saw Deese struggling in the icy water, called 911, and started a rescue, using their jackets as an improvised rope.
Schmeichel crawled towards Deese, extending the makeshift rope, while Weiss held the rescuer’s legs, and pulled Deese to safety on thicker ice. The Stutsman County Dive Team and the Highway Patrol assisted in the rescue.
Stutsman County Sheriff Chad Kaiser says Deese was taken by ambulance to Jamestown Regional Medical Center. He declined medical assistance.
