ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota now ranks 14th in the nation for its gun safety laws, according to the nonprofit organization Everytown for Gun Safety.
Susie Kaufman of Minnesota Moms Demand Action says Minnesota moved up three spots after state lawmakers approved what she calls two “common sense” gun safety policies.
“We passed a background check on all gun sales and then we passed this red flag law,” Kaufman says. “That allows family members to petition the court to remove guns from the homes of people the court deems to be a danger to themselves and others.”
Kaufman says the data show states with stronger laws have less gun violence.
Republican legislators argued these measures take Second Amendment rights away from law-abiding citizens.
