ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A federal appeals court has upheld former Minneapolis police officer Tou Thao’s conviction for violating the civil rights of George Floyd during his 2020 murder by then-officer Derek Chauvin.
The three-judge panel ruled prosecutors provided sufficient evidence to convict Thao for failing to intervene, and being deliberately indifferent to Floyd’s medical needs.
Thao’s attorney said he vehemently disagrees with the decision, and his client “will continue to pursue every possible avenue for relief in this case.”
Thao is serving a three-and-a-half-year federal prison term, and will be sentenced Monday on a state conviction for aiding and abetting manslaughter.
