ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesotans over 16 years old can fish without a license if they are accompanying a child 15 years old or younger this Saturday and Sunday for the Department of Natural Resource’s annual “Take a Kid Fishing” weekend.
The DNR’s Benji Kohn said the weekend is meant to encourage people with grandkids, nieces, nephews, or other kids in their lives that want to learn a little bit about fishing to take them fishing.
“It’s a way we can get adults out there with kids, and adults don’t need a license,” Kohn said.
Many state parks have equipment available to borrow, but Kohn recommends calling ahead.
“If you don’t have a fishing license, it’s no big deal,” Kohn said. “You can go help them out and fish with them. Hopefully you find it exciting, and some adults decide to buy a license and continue fishing throughout the summer and maybe even in the winter.”
