DOUGLAS COUNTY, Minn. (KFGO) – A man attempted to save his 85-year-old father from his burning house near Miltona, Minnesota, northeast of Alexandria Sunday night but the home was engulfed in flames and the son was unable to get inside because of the smoke, heat, and flames.
Charles DeMartelaere, 52, the son, was in an outbuilding on the property around 9:30 p.m. when he spotted the house burning.
Once the fire was out, Miltona fire crews found 85-year-old Gene DeMartelaere’s body and a dog on the main floor of the house. Charles DeMartelaere, was transported to the Alexandria Hospital for smoke inhalation and later released.
The fire is under investigation.
