FARGO, N.D. (KFGO) – In October, Fargo City Commissioners approved the formation of an election and city governance task force to look into possible changes in city government.
Applications were sought for a 9-member citizen panel. However, only 5 people applied by the November 24th deadline, and two additional applications came in late. Now, Mayor Tim Mahoney has recommended the plan be put on hold.
He says the task force would be delayed until the June 2022 elections are over and at that time, the new city commission can discuss if the task force remains a priority and if it is what model should be used to seek citizens for the positions.
The citizen task force would examine whether the city should convert from a city commission to a city council. That would require members be elected by wards instead of commissioners elected at large.
The study would also look at whether term limits should continue, and if the mayor’s position should be full-time.
