ASHLEY, N.D. (KFGO) – A sister of a North Dakota farmer jailed in Ukraine, accused in a murder-for-hire plot, says the family is under great emotional strain and has few answers.
50-year-old Kurt Groszhans is believed to be in prison on claims that he and a woman in Ukraine were planning to assassinate a top ag. official in that country.
“It is the worst possible nightmare any family could ever experience, especially when you are notified during the middle of the night, receiving this type of information, and have no contact with your brother overseas, we just, we feel so helpless,” Kristi Magnusson told Joel Heitkamp on KFGO News and Views.
Magnusson said the family has been in frequent contact with Sen. John Hoeven, who is working with the US Embassy in Ukraine and the Dept. of State. Sen. Kevin Cramer and Rep. Kelly Armstrong have also offered their help and support she said.
Magnusson said her brother and the Ukrainian official who claims he was the target of the murder-for-hire scheme farmed land together before he embezzled $250,000 from her brother.
