MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has put the National Guard on standby in case of more civil unrest in Uptown Minneapolis.
Uptown has faced a number of nights of civil unrest after the killing of Winston Smith. Protesters have shut down the intersection at Lake Street and Girard Avenue and police removed barricades twice on Tuesday while staying in the area that night.
Mayor Jacob Frey requested a “limited number” of soldiers to deal with potential unrest in Uptown related to the police shooting of Winston Smith.
According to the Governor’s office, the National Guard would assist local law enforcement should they need help. There have been no orders made of the guard at this time.
