MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Both Fargo and Moorhead police have taken several reports of catalytic converter thefts in recent weeks.
Moorhead Police Capt. Deric Swenson says the metal can be turned into cash at salvage yards. He says the thieves have hit privately-owned cars and pickups and vehicles owned by businesses. Some are in parking lots with poor lighting.
Swenson says a thief familiar with the process of removing the pollution control equipment from a vehicle’s exhaust system can do it fairly quickly.
Fargo Police Lt. George Vinson says officers have also responded to catalytic converter thefts recently, but he did not have a firm number saying the thefts are under investigation.
A spokeswoman for West Fargo police said the department had not taken any such reports.
