WASHINGTON (KFGO) – The Senate Judiciary committee is holding a hearing with former Special Counsel Jack Smith.
He brought federal indictments against President Donald Trump over allegations he tried to overturn the 2020 election.
Democratic Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar asked Smith about a tweet Mr. trump sent on January 6, 2021 about the former vice president certifying election results saying “Mike Pence didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done.”
“Isn’t it true that immediately following that tweet, Pence’s Secret Service detail was forced to evacuate the vice president,” Klobuchar asked.
“That conduct endangered the vice president and it also provided further evidence of the president’s intent, criminal intent, to obstruct the certification procedure and have his supporters who were attacking the capitol continue to obstruct it,” Smith said.
Republican Texas Senator John Cornyn asked Smith about being named special prosecutor three days after President Trump won the 2024 election.
“How is it that any supporter of the president would view that as a nonpolitical or nonpartisan act?” Cornyn asked.
“I understood it as an act to take politics out of the decision. My job was to be an independent prosecutor and make an independent judgement,” Smith said.
