N.D. Speaker of the House shares support for Measure 1, believes it should take a 66% vote for ballot measures to pass

NORTH DAKOTA (KFGO) – On “News and Views”, North Dakota Speaker of the House Robin Weisz shared why he’s in favor of Measure 1.

If voters approve it in November, it will take 60% of votes for future constitutional ballot measures to pass.

“I don’t believe our constitution was ever designed to just be changed at the whim of whatever might be the latest, greatest thing this year or next year,” Weisz explained.

Weisz also mentioned constitutional ballot measures can’t be changed by the legislature, but only by another ballot measure.

“It’s not a magic number. It’s an arbitrary number. If I had my druthers, it’d be two-thirds. I think it needs to be a number that ensures that the large majority of the citizens agree that this is a operational document,” Weisz said.

The group Protect The North Dakota Constitution believes Measure 1 makes it nearly impossible for citizens to pass ballot measures.

“We should never vote to give up our own power and hand it over to politicians and special interests,” the Protect The North Dakota Constitution website reads.
