DICKINSON, N.D. (KFGO) – Friday morning, North Dakota U.S. Senator John Hoeven brought together U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Schultz, State Ag Comissioner Doug Goehring and representatives from state grazing associations to discuss issues with grazing and National Grasslands that could be fixed with the next Senate Farm Bill.
Among the concerns discussed was establishing mandatory country of origin labeling for beef sold in the U.S., which Hoeven has repeatedly supported.
The group also discussed managing prairie dogs on National Grasslands, and would like to reauthorize a program that funds improving and restoring grasslands in North Dakota.
Hoeven and Schultz agreed on improving access through infrastructure like roads so ranchers have easier access to their cattle in the grasslands. The group also pushed for weed control in the grasslands.
Hoeven says access to federal lands is vital for economies in North Dakota, where the Forest Service manages more than one million acres.
