FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) – The Fargo Police traffic safety team is combating dangerous driving around the city and providing an update after a busy summer so far.
“We may take more proactive enforcement to combat certain areas, certain driving behavior, reckless driving,” Officer Trae Schmidt said.
The team says last month was a success.
“Traffic safety has conducted around 800 traffic stops just in the month of July. And so far just about halfway through the year, we’ve insured about 1,800 to 1,900 dangerous driving tickets,” Schmidt said. “We do everything we can to be as efficient as possible with the resources we have to make the biggest difference,”
Schmidt says it’s not all about writing citations. The visibility of their officers is just as important for keeping the roadways safe.
“Obviously people see a police officer, and they’re probably going to slow down, and we take that as a win. Just us being out and about, even if we’re not doing a traffic stop, or we’re on a different stop issuing a ticket, others are seeing us, and it’s a friendly reminder that we’re out and about,” Schmidt said.
They hope when they do need to make a stop, it leads to safer driving in the future.
“Our biggest goal is after our interaction that it maybe opens your eyes to your unsafe driving,” Schmidt said.
