MOORHEAD (KFGO) – The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County has announced that shipbuilder Jay Smith will present at the Hjemkomst Center this month on his time working on the replica Viking ship Valkryie.
Smith’s presentation will show Viking culture and traditional ship construction. Valkyrie was build at Aspøya Boats in Anacortes, Washington.

He started researching and building ships 35 years ago in a small boat shop on a fjord in Norway, and has made a living building and repairing boats.
Smith also has a connection with the Hjemkomst ship, he built a boat named Inga used to carry supplies between the Hjemkomst and land in areas with limited port access. The boat was named after Hjemkomst builder Robert Asp’s mother Inga Asp.
Jay Smith will present The Thrills and Challenges of Building the Viking Ship Valkyrie on Tuesday, June 23rd, at 6 p.m.
