MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Moorhead police have opened an investigation after nearly a dozen Horizon Middle School students reported feeling sick after eating what was believed to be candy given to them by a student on Monday afternoon. Police say they believe it contained THC.
The Moorhead Area Public School District says the students complained of nausea. Based on information gathered so far, police believe the substance in the candy was THC. At this stage of the investigation, none of the students involved have been cooperative with officers, which has limited the ability to gather additional details. Police will continue to investigate and will pursue charges if possible.
Police Chief Chris Helmick said “this is a really unfortunate situation. As a parent with children in the MAPS system, I understand and relate to the concerns being raised within our community. We will continue to work with Moorhead Area Public Schools as we investigate the incident and determine how we can prevent something like this from happening again. We also strongly encourage parents and guardians of children of all ages to speak with their kids about the importance of not consuming candy, food, or other items when they do not know exactly what they are.”
Because this incident involves minors, no further student information will be released.
In a earlier statement, the school district says staff acted immediately, utilizing standard safety protocols to contact emergency medical services. first responders arrived on-site to assess impacted students. after medical evaluation, two students required transportation to a medical facility for further evaluation. The other students were released to their parents or guardians.
The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority. The police department is investigating the source and nature of the unknown substance. Because this involves minors, no further student details will be released at this time, according to the statement.
In an email shared with families, the school district said the incident serves as a critical reminder to students and families about food safety and peer pressure.
