THOMPSON, N.D. (KFGO) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol says I-29 near Thompson was closed for several hours Wednesday after an explosive device was found during a traffic stop.
Patrol Lieutenant Ryan Panasuk says a trooper stopped a vehicle with illegal window tint around 8:40 a.m. Troopers conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle, and saw what they believed were explosives. The Grand Forks Bomb Squad was called, and I-29 was closed for safety.
The device was detonated around 12:10 p.m. The car was screened using x-rays and searched again.
Two Fargo men, Gabriel Messmer and Christopher Ringsrud-Knowles, were arrested for possessing explosives. Messmer was driving and also cited for driving without insurance and given a warning for tinted windows.
