WATERTOWN, S.D. (KFGO KWAT) – A lightning strike caused a church fire in Watertown Monday afternoon.
The fire at Hosanna Lutheran Church was reported just before 1:30 p.m.
Pastor Craig Werling and Administrative Secretary Anna Kettwig were the only two people inside the church when the lightning hit. At that point, Kettwig says the church’s internet and phone system went down.
She stepped outside and smelled smoke and made the 911 call.
Watertown Fire-Rescue fought the fire in rainy, windy and cold conditions.
The only flames visible from the exterior of the church were along the ridgeline of the roof over the sanctuary. Fire crews used a ladder truck to attack the fire from above the church.
There were no injuries.
