HORACE, N.D. (KFGO) – Hoping to have backyard chickens in Horace? It will happen, but not quite yet.
Several years ago, the city council decided to no longer allow farm animals like chickens to be raised in the city.
However, City Community Development Director Jace Hellman says based on comments heard from those who want to raise chickens in their yards, city staff decided to reconsider allowing backyard flocks.
The city put out a survey last month with more than 800 responses overwhelmingly in favor of allowing chickens, with restrictions. Residents in the survey indicated that among the main reasons for allowing backyard chickens were fresh eggs, savings on groceries, and self-sufficiency.
Hellman says requirements will include a limit on the number of chickens allowed, sanitation, and fencing.
The new ordinance should be ready by late summer.
