ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Senate passed a new broadband bill intended to keep workers installing the services safer.
Lawmakers say this will speed up broadband installations across the state while upholding strong labor and safety standards.
Sen. Rob Kupec of Moorhead authored the bill.
“Everyone deserves access to high-speed broadband internet in Minnesota, but we must make sure that this broadband expansion is done safely by workers trained to do it,” Kupec says. “With support from labor, industry, and community leaders, this bill updates and aligns state policy to protect workers and help us meet our broadband goals.”
The bill, which passed 64-0, requires any worker installing underground broadband to have the necessary safety certification beginning on Jan. 1, 2026.
