Fargo Fire Chief Steve Dirksen
FARGO (KFGO) – Fargo Fire Chief Steve Dirksen has decided to move up his retirement. Originally planning to retire July 4, Dirksen now says his last day will be May 16.
Dirksen said family considerations played a part in his decision, including the recent death of his father. He’s accepted a new job, out of the fire service.
“It’s working in analytics, somewhere I can put together my history of what I’ve learned throughout the last 36 years, plus some of my degree and business management, my masters in business administration, I will be able to use a lot of that, and really just kind of step away from the emergency services world, do something different that isn’t maybe as exciting,” said Dirksen.
Dirksen said he plans to move to northeastern South Dakota where he’ll be able to work remotely. He joined the fire department in the fall of 2011. Dirksen came to Fargo from Sioux Falls where he had been a battalion chief. When he was named fire chief, two longtime Fargo Fire Dept. employees were also finalists for the job.
Through a national search, the city has received numerous applications for the fire chief position and the application period has closed.
Citing state law, the city says of the list of applicants’ names will not be released at this point in the search process. There are 15 applicants.
