BISMARCK (KFGO) – The North Dakota Senate has narrowly passed a bill that would increase the speed limit on interstates to 80 mph.
House Bill 1298 would fine speeders $5 for every mile-per-hour over the speed limit. It also increases the number of points drivers would lose off their license for various infractions.
The senate passed an amended version of the bill 25-21. The house will now have to approve the amendments before the bill goes to Gov. Armstrong’s desk.
State lawmakers two years ago approved a bill that was identical to the original bill that passed the house. Then-Gov. Doug Burgum vetoed it, citing the state’s Vision Zero initiative to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on the state’s roadways.
Gov. Armstrong, then a state representative, voted in favor of a 2017 bill to increase speed limits on interstates to 80 mph.
