FARGO (KFGO/KVRR) — Fargo Mayor Tim Mahoney says the city will take a step back and play a more supportive role to end homelessness.
FM Coalition to End Homelessness and United Way of Cass Clay presented a plan for the next 30, 60 and 90 days to reduce the number of people who are homeless. They will count on a number of existing partners to do that.
They also want to prevent the return of homeless camps.
Mahoney says at last count, Fargo still has five active camps with six people, three dogs and one cat.
“Our service providers have been doing incredible work for decades and they are quite frankly the reason why we don’t see more homelessness on the street then we see now,” said Chandler Esslinger with FM Coalition to End Homelessness.
No vote was taken after the presentation.
Mahoney also presented an idea for a Community Service Center which would replace the Downtown Engagement Center.
Commissioner Dave Piepkorn suggested moving all homeless services out of the downtown area, including relocating The Salvation Army.
