YANKTON, S.D. (KFGO) – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says Yankton Police officers were justified when they shot and wounded a man earlier this month.
It happened Dec. 5 after officers were called to the Yankton High School parking lot where 40-year-old Andrew Jondahl was sitting in his pickup after being escorted out of an event. The caller said Jondahl appeared intoxicated, was making threats of self harm, and had a long gun on his lap.
Officers say Jondahl refused commands and got out of the pickup holding two shotguns. They say he was holding the shotguns in a way that threatened the officers.
The officers fired 14 rounds at Jondahl who suffered four non-life-threatening wounds.
Investigators say Jondahl had a blood-alcohol level of .152 and the shotguns were loaded. One had a round in the chamber.
Jackley says there was a napkin in Jondahl’s pickup with handwriting saying, “I will kill them until they kill me.”
Charges are pending against Jondahl.
It’s the fifth officer involved shooting in South Dakota this year.
