FERGUS FALLS, Minn. – Jurors are set to begin deliberating on a verdict Friday in a human smuggling trial in Minnesota.
The prosecution rested its case against Hari Patel and Steve Shand in a federal courtroom in Fergus Falls Thursday.
The defense chose not to call witnesses, and both sides have presented their closing arguments. Prosecutors accuse the two defendants of being part of a human smuggling ring that illegally transported residents from India into the United States by having them walk across the northern border.
A family of four died in a blizzard while attempting to cross the US/Canadian border in 2022.
