MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Friday marks 10 years since 18-year-old Tom Bearson was murdered, and while the case remains unsolved, Moorhead police say recent advancements in DNA technology have led investigators to review previously collected evidence.
Bearson was last seen with friends and fellow students south of NDSU’s campus in the early morning hours of Sept. 20, 2014. He was reported missing later that day when he didn’t show up for a ride to see family in Alexandria. His remains were found three days later at an RV sales parking lot in Moorhead.
Capt. Deric Swenson says investigators with Moorhead Police, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, and Federal Bureau of Investigation continue to pursue every investigative avenue.
Swenson says besides using new DNA technology to analyze evidence, investigators are asking anyone who might have information to contact police, regardless of how insignificant they think that information might be.
People familiar with what happened may have exhibited changes in behavior like:
- Altering of physical appearance (change in hair color or cut, growth or removal of facial hair, etc.)
- Change in normal routine, which might include missing work, classes, or appointments
- Unexplained injuries (cuts on hands, bruises, etc.) during the period Tom was last seen alive and then recovered
- Sudden departure from the area after Tom’s death
- A change in someone’s mood or displays of anxiety, nervousness, or irritability
- Cleaning of vehicles
- Intense interest or noticeable disinterest in the investigation or an unexplained knowledge of the situation
Regardless of how insignificant you think your information might be, or whether you think the Moorhead Police Department is already aware of it, investigators would like you to contact them. The department has a designated phone line and email address to share information.
