ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – A non-profit government watchdog group, Public Record Media, is asking a judge to order the Minnesota Department of Public Safety to turn over records of how Governor Tim Walz and other state officials responded to riots after the murder of George Floyd in 2020.
The group’s spokesman, Matt Ehling, points to what he calls “narrative control” by the Walz administration.
The governor, as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate, is under continued fire from former President Donald Trump. Trump says Walz let Minneapolis burn, while Trump says he was ready to send in the National Guard -an allegation Walz strongly disputes.
The governor’s press secretary says they’ve added staff and technology to respond more quickly to data requests but also must “ensure we comply with the law and protect employees’ personal information and sensitive government data.”
