FARGO (KFGO) – A St. Michael, North Dakota woman has pleaded guilty to federal charges related to the death of a 1-year-old on the Spirit Lake Reservation.
Kenzie Baker, 27, called 911 in February 2023 and reported that the child was not breathing. The child died at a hospital in Devils Lake.
An autopsy determined that the death was the result of neglect and abuse and repeated injuries that went untreated. Baker admitted that she was aware of swelling for two weeks, but didn’t seek medical care. Sentencing is set for January.
Co-defendant Collin Delorme claimed that the child was injured when he misjudged a step, slipped and hit the child with a flashlight. Delorme is scheduled for a jury trial in November on four charges, including murder.
US Attorney Mac Schneider calls the death senseless, wasteful and utterly cruel.
