DULUTH, Minn. (KFGO) – A Red Lake woman has been charged with murder, arson and child neglect in the deaths of her two children on the northern Minnesota reservation on March 15.
The US Attorney’s Office says Jennifer Stately, 35, slashed the two children with a knife or other sharp object and then stabbed one of the children in the chest. Prosecutors say Stately set fire to her home and fled with another child with the two kids inside the home. She was arrested later that night with her son in central Minnesota.
The boy’s disappearance prompted an Amber Alert.
Stately is charged with one count of premeditated murder, a count of murder in the course of committing child abuse, murder while committing arson and a count of felony child neglect. A magistrate judge ordered that stately remain in custody pending further court hearings.
The case was investigated Red Lake Tribal Police, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, FBI, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Long Prairie police and the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.
