EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. (KFGO) – American Crystal Sugar Company has been fined $350,000 for multiple air quality violations at its East Grand Forks sugar beet plant.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency says the violations include releasing more hydrogen sulfide and particulate matter than its permit allows. The violations happened between 2020 and 2022.
American Crystal Sugar Company will also need to complete a series of corrections.
According to state law, 40% of the fine payment must go to a community health board near the penalized facility when the penalty is over $250,000. In this case, 40% of the fine payment will go to the Polk-Norman-Mahnomen Community Health Board.
