EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. (KFGO) – The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has released an initial report identifying the agency of the officer who shot and killed a rural East Grand Forks man during a warrant service on Tuesday and providing additional details about the incident.
The BCA report says 42-year-old Lucas Gilbertson had a handgun when East Grand Forks Police and Polk County deputies surrounded the Polk County home to make the arrest shortly before noon. An undercover officer and member of the Pine-to-Prairie Drug Task Force entered the home and deployed his taser and fired his department-issued handgun when he encountered Gilbertson. The report says, at some point during the confrontation, Gilbertson broke a window and threw the handgun outside, which was later found on the ground next to the home.
The BCA says there is body-worn and squad car video, but not of the actual shooting.
Gilbertson was taken to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks where he died Tuesday afternoon. An autopsy from the UND Forensic Pathologist confirmed he died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Gilbertson, who had a lengthy criminal history, was wanted on outstanding warrants.
The officer, whose name is not being released at this time, is on standard administrative leave while the investigation is underway.
