DULUTH, Minn. (KFGO) – Essentia Health and Marshfield Health System of Wisconsin will not move forward with a merger.
Essentia, based in Duluth with a hospital in Fargo and 13 other hospitals and 78 clinics across the region, says Marshfield’s financial situation was a primary factor in the decision. In July, the two health systems entered into an agreement to form a new regional health system serving four states. Discussions had been underway for two years.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison had expressed concerns with the planned merger. The Minnesota Nurses Association says the decision is a win for patients and employees of Essentia.
