CASS LAKE, Minn. (KFGO) – Charges have been upgraded to murder for the mother of a two-year-old who died Thursday of suspected child abuse.
According to Cass County, Minnesota Sheriff Bryan Welk, a call came in last Saturday night reporting a 23-month-old child had been run over by a vehicle in rural Cass Lake on the Leech Lake Reservation. The child received life-saving aid at the scene and was then flown to Sanford in Fargo.
While investigating the incident, law enforcement suspected the injuries were from abuse and not a vehicle accident.
The child’s mother, 30-year-old Larena Jackson of Cass Lake, was arrested for attempted murder, assault, and child abuse on Tuesday and booked into jail.
On Friday, the attempted murder charge was upgraded to 2nd degree murder.
