SABIN, Minn. (KFGO) – The future of a low-volume wooden bridge near Sabin that was severely damaged by fire this week will likely be the topic of a future meeting between the Clay County Highway Dept. and the township board.
County Engineer Justin Sorum says the bridge was built from railroad ties and was rated as structurally deficient. It spanned the Buffalo River and was scheduled to be decommissioned.
Sorum says he doesn’t have a traffic count for the bridge, but it was likely only used a few times a day. He says replacing the crossing will be a joint decision.
The fire was reported around 9:30 Tuesday night. Sheriff Mark Empting says the fire appears to be a case of arson. The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting in the investigation.
The bridge remains closed.
